Is Distilled Water an Electrolyte or Non-Electrolyte?

To tell if Distilled Water (often called pure water) is an electrolyte or nonelectrolyte we first need to know what type of compound we have. Because is a nonmetal and is a nonmetal we know that Distilled Water is a covalent/molecular compound. water. In general these compounds are insoluble in water.
We have a bit of a problem since our definition for an electrolyte is \”a substance that dissolves in water and produces ions resulting in a solution that conducts electricity.\” Does water dissolve in water? For this reason you could argue that water is not an electrolyte.
On the otherhand, water will autoionize and create a small amount of H+ and OH ions. Since there ions we could argue that water is an electrolyte but that it is a very weak electrolyte.
As with many things in chemistry, follow what your instructor says is correct but understand that there are two ways to look at whether water is an electrolyte.
Classifying Electrolytes
Strong Electrolyte: completely dissociate in solution and conducts electricity. Soluble ionic compounds and strong acids are electrolytes.
Weak Electrolyte: partially dissociate in solution and poorly conduct electricity.
NonElectrolytes: do not dissociate into ions and do not conduct electricity. Most molecular compounds are nonelectrolytes.

Sports drinks, like Gatorade or Powerade, consist of primarily Potassium and Sodium electrolytes to provide hydration due to sweating. Other important electrolytes are chloride , calcium, magnesium, and phosphate. Drinks containing electrolytes are also used extensively in medicine for oral rehydration.

Good To Know: What Is The Difference Between Distilled Water And Purified Water?
What is purification and distillation?
All publicly available water is purified, including tap water. Purification is a process that removes one or more impurities from the water.
Is distilled water the same as purified water?
It probably sounds like purified water and distilled water are the same. But they’re not.
Purified water versus distilled water.
Purified water and distilled water are similar; they have a few things in common:
1. Both have very few impurities.
2. Both are safe for humans and pets drink.
3. You’ll find both types of water bottled and sold commercially.
4. Both can be used in most household applications.
5. Water quality of both is closely monitored.
But they have a few key differences:
There are many ways to purify water, but only one method to distill.
Purified water may have residual mineral deposits; but distilled water will not.
Distilled water is used in more technical applications than purified water.
Purified water generally involves a filtration method only.
Distilled water is tasteless but purified water is not.
How you use distilled or purified water?
Purified water and distilled water both have several uses besides just drinking.
Which is better to drink?
Distilled water and purified water are equally safe and effective to drink.
Purified water tends to be less expensive and contains minerals that your body needs anyway.

Biology \u0026 Chemistry : What Is the pH of Distilled Water?

By definition, water has a pH of seven because it has an equal concentration of hydrogen ions, and so the pH of distilled water should be seven. Find out how distilled water can become more acidic with help from a science teacher and field biologist in this free video on pH levels of water.
